Today we got to put our netball skills to use with a fun session run by Aroha from Kiwisport. We had a great time with the different games that she taught us and relays that got us using some skills you need to have for netball. Some of us played basketball for the school last year and found there are some differences between netball and basketball one major one being you can not step with the netball instead we learnt to pivot.
We are a class of year 3 and 4 children at Vardon School in Hamilton. The purpose of this blog is to share what we are learning with others. Click into our individual blogs to see samples of our work and reflections of what we did well and what we can improve on.

Cross Country
This term we started our cross country training by going out each morning for circuit training. This got our heart pumping and then we started practicing running around the field pacing ourselves so that we didn't run out of puff! We made the field into a butterfly with one side of the field (butterfly wing) a walking side and the other a running side. Then everyone had to try their best to sprint down the middle of the cricket pitch. After each lap we collected an iceblock stick and tallied these up in our books.
Congratulations to everyone that gave it a go!
And another congratulations to Amelia (who came fourth in the 7-year-old girls) Gina (who came third in the 7-year-old girls).

Hockey
On Friday we had a go at playing hockey. None of us play hockey as a winter sport so it was great fun to get out and give it ago. We learnt how to hold the stick properly, and open and closed dribbling. Closed is like glue stuck to the ball and stick and open is when there is elastic between the ball and stick. Like all team games we need to learn to spread out so that when someone on our team gets the ball they can pass it to us and we can make a run for it.

Tabloid Sports
What a great day was had by all and we were lucky enough that the weather held off for us, in fact it almost got a little too hot! This year we had a range of fun new games from the classic egg and spoon race to polka dot goals and games with wet sponges. We worked together as a team to get points and helped the juniors. But the highlight was at the end of the day when each of the middle and senior classes went head to head in a tug of war competition. We had practised some techniques of counting one, two, three pull and standing on alternate sides of the rope but Room 10 were just too strong for us!
