Survivor Challenge-Writing

This week our challenge was a writing one. We had to work as a team to come up with a creative piece of writing. We were given five minutes to plan our story and then just 15 minutes to write it. The catch was it had to include three objects somewhere in the story. These objects were; an umbrella, scarf and a hot dog.
At first we thought how are we going to put all of these three things into one story but quickly we found a way and here are our stories.

Mighty Eagles
One day one big hairy faced man named Mr Twit who always gets hot dogs and his wife Mrs Twit who always gets new umbrellas and their rabbit called Ella who always wears a scarf ate bird pie. A cow girl called Eva always goes around town in her cowgirl boots or heelies and her horse goes clip clop clip clip in his fancy hooves. Oh by the way his name is Rico. His hooves are so annoying that people say get out of town you fancy horse.

Golden Bell Tui's
Mr and Mrs Twit head off to the beach while holding an umbrella and scarf. Look Mr Twit there is a delicious hot dog truck. Should we get some delicious hot dogs? Yes gasped Mr Twit so they put down their scarf and umbrella and ran off to the hot dog truck which was really far away and the first time the Twit's had ever run.

Green Pythons
Once upon a time there was a boy called Alex and his big step brother named Jayden. One day they went to buy a scarf and a hot dog. But after a few seconds it started raining. Then they started thinking out the box it was midnight they ran to the umbrella shop.

Lightening Strikes
One day there was an old lady who walked past a hot dog shop while it was raining with her umbrella and her scarf on her neck because it was snowing. Her dog was called hot dog and she was the poshest dog in the entire world. Like totally! She went back into the hot dog shop and there was just one left so she dived for it but someone else just got it.

Survivor Challenge-Problem Solving

This week we really had to think outside the square with the problems we had been given. We were given riddles and clues to solve and suddenly our weekly challenge got very tricky! This meant we had to work extra hard as a team to try our best and not give up. Working together and with a few clues along the way we soon discovered it wasn't as tricky as we first thought.

With this one the question was how many letters are in the alphabet? To get the answer we had to change the letter to the letter that comes after the letter shown and then guess what letter would make sense in the two gaps.

Survivor Challenge-PE

This week our challenge was to work as a team to keep the balloon up off the ground. The challenge was at different times Mrs Head would call out a body part and we could only use our elbows, noses, ears, bottoms etc to keep the balloon up. This made it trickier than just using our hands like normal and we really had to work as a team to avoid all of us just watching the balloon fall to the ground or to share the balloon around the group to make sure everyone was participating. There were a few arguments and the team that won the challenge (Golden Bell Tui's) and the team that had the best teamwork (Lightening Strikes) worked together to share the balloon around, make calls as to who would grab it and huddled tightly together so the balloon had less risk of touching the ground.
After our challenge we had a discussion around what made these teams successful and every team is going to try extra hard next week to work together as a TEAM so that their team can earn the most points.

Survivor Challenge-Oral Language

This weeks Survivor Challenge involved talking and every teacher knows us kids love to talk!
The challenge was an oral language one where we were each given a card with a picture of part of a nursery rhyme. The challenge was we weren't allowed to show anyone our card. Only we could look at the picture and we had to carefully describe it to the rest of our group. Once we had taken turns to describe the picture on our card we had to think about what nursery rhyme it might be about. Some of us found this tricky because there are a few rhymes that involve spiders! But eventually we all figured it out and it was Little Miss Muffet. Once we knew the nursery rhyme, we were able to describe our pictures to the group again and decide what order they needed to go in so that they illustrated the rhyme from beginning to end. But we still weren't allowed to look and had to lie the pictures face down. Mrs Head then came around to check and if we had the order right we were able to flip it over.
What helped us make the challenge easier was that each picture was different so if we described our picture really well we could work as a team to decide the order.

Survivor Challenge-Week 4

Today was another technology challenge but a bit different to the engineer pasta and marshmellow challenge. This week we had to become fashion designers creating some wearable art within the theme of swimming. But we could only use two pairs of scissors, a couple of strips of cellotape that Mrs Head handed out and one roll of toliet paper.

We had five minutes to plan our ideas thinking about what we wear when we go swimming and any accessories we might have eg: snorkles, flippers, goggles, towels etc. Then we had 30 minutes to create our wearable art thinking carefully about how to put it together so that it didn't rip and without running out of tape to hold it together.

Some groups worked better than others this week with some teams struggling to get everyone involved. It is a team challenge so congratulations this week go to the Lightening Strikes who had everyone involved the whole time to create their wetsuited boogie boarder.

Survivor Challenge- Art

This week our challenge was an art based challenge. We were each given an A5 piece of paper but we had to create a piece of art that linked us as a group. Our art had to have one colourful curved line running through the middle of everyone in the groups art. Then we had to become creative with black and white lines to decorate around the outside of the coloured line joining all of our art together.

The idea behind the artwork is the different black and white lines are to represent how everyone in class is different but the coloured line shows how we all have to link together and help each other to be the best we can be and make the most of all of our learning opportunities.

This week we were given marks on teamwork but also on how creative we were, how well our coloured line linked through the whole groups artwork and the overall presentation.

Well done to the Green Pythons who were very creative and thought about keeping their coloured line consistent. Also well done to the Golden Bell Tui's who scored the points for best team work as they were the group that listened to instructions, laid everyone's piece of paper out to make sure their curved line ran through everyone's and worked together to help each other when others in the group finished quickly.

Survivor Challenge-Building a Tower

This week the challenge wasn't quite as easy as we all first thought. The challenge was to build the tallest tower (to stand on its own) using only marshmellows and spaghetti pasta. It turns out the pasta wasn't that strong and could break easily so we really had to work as a team and be resilient when our ideas didn't work the first time. We all had a few different attempts at making our base strong enough to hold the rest of the height of the tower and here is what we came up with.

The scores are now pretty even as teams are learning how to work together when things get tough.
The Golden Bell Tui's and Green Pythons are in the lead on 40 points. Followed closely by the Mighty Eagles on 35 and the Lightening Strikes on 30.

Survivor Challenge

Today we started our Survivor Challenge to help teach us how to work as a team. Our first challenge was to come up with a team name and a jingle.
Check out the videos to hear our jingles.

Points are given out each week.
-5 points to every team who participates in the challenge
-10 points to the winning team
-20 points to the team that works together the best (has the best teamwork).

Well done to the Golden Bell Tui's who have taken the early lead with 35 points, they worked as a team really well and as a result had the most polished jingle.
Lightning Strikes aren't far behind on 25 points working together as a team to help everyone become involved.
Mighty Eagles had a few hiccups along the way so they got a bonus five points for being resilient which means they have 10 points.
And the Green Pythons gave it a go with two people from their group away today to gain 5 points.

Survivor Challenge-Week 7

This week each team were given a roll of toliet paper (straight from the packet), one felt, two pairs of scissors and some sellotape. With this the superhero costumes were designed and at the end of the afternoon catwalked in our classroom. Well done teams you are all starting to work better as a team.

Survivor Challenge-Week 6

This weeks challenge was a logical mathematical challenge. We had four brain bending questions and we all had to work together as a team to think outside the box to solve the riddles and problems. Well done to The Golden Tui's group who not only completed the challenge the fastest and with all the questions answered correctly they also worked as one of the best teams making sure everyone was involved.

 

 

Survivor Challenge-Week 5

Our challenge for Week 5 was the helium stick. For this challenge everyone in the team had to have the bamboo stick resting on their two index fingers and as a team move the stick down to the floor. Never taking any fingers off the stick. The reason it is called the helium stick is because sometimes one person can lift the stick which means everyone else lifts their fingers up to keep them on the stick moving the stick up instead of down. Well done to the Golden Tui's who worked as a team, they started ready standing as they had been shown and worked together despite it getting a little lop sided.

Survivor Challenge-Week 4

We are heading to Pirongia on our bush walk but first we need to know a little bit about the layers of a forest.
This weeks Survivor Challenge involved getting the names of the layers and a description of each layer. We had to match the layers to their description and then name the layers on our forest diagrams.

Survivor Challenge-Week 3

Gosh we have discovered that sometimes it is challenging to work together to get a job done!
Last week our challenge was to put the voice to another groups silent video filmed the week before.
This was easier said than done and we have only just finished them.
But for our first attempt it wasn't a bad job.
Have a listen see if you can play the sound and video at the same time. It took us all a few goes to match our voices to what was happening in the video.

Survivor Challenge-Week 2

Week two of the survivor challenge...
We have been reading the story 'Have you filled a bucket today?' and discussing the message of paying each other compliments and making everyone feel valued and special within the class.
So this weeks challenge was to create a silent movie with the theme of kindness.
Once again we had to work as a team to get the most points.
For this challenge we had to think about a storyline for our movie and we had to think really hard about how we were going to show our expressions and create a story without any dialogue (talking).
Next week the challenge will be to pass one groups film onto another group to add the dialogue to the movie - we will then see how well the first group did at acting to see if their stories match up.

Well done to the Crystal Lightening Bolt team who worked really hard as a team getting straight into brainstorming their movie idea and being the first to finish filming.

Survivor Challenge

On Friday we started our Survivor Challenge.
Each week for the rest of this term we are going to complete a challenge that teaches us how to work as a team and get along with our classmates.
Mrs Head put us into four teams and we will work in those four teams for the rest of the term. We are all trying our best to work together and be the winning team at the end of the term.
With each challenge we earn points. Every team that participates gets 5 points, the winning team gets 10 points and the team that works best as a team gets 20 points.
This week being the first week back at school we had to come up with a team name that we agreed on and a team chant/jingle. We then performed our chant/jingle to the rest of the class.

Well done to The Golden Tui's who won this weeks challenge with 25 points (five for participating and 20 for the best teamwork). They all voted on the team name until they came to one they all agreed on. Creating their jingle everyone was involved including Trinity who was on crutches.
