Maths-Place Value

At the beginning of the year we had to do the dreaded IKAN test. A super FAST maths test to see what we can answer quickly. One area we all need to practice as a class is our place value. So on Friday we did a quick activity with ice block sticks. Some were bunched together in groups of ten (these were our tens) and some were loose ice block sticks (these were our ones). Mrs Head then called out a number and we had to make that number with the ice block sticks and tell her how many groups of ten made up the number and how many ones there were.

Next time we try this we will use counters and tens frames.
As a side note it was great to see lots of the groups choosing to make tally marks with their ones to easily show how many ones you had, bringing some of your statistics knowledge into your number knowledge.

What are some ways you practice your place value?

  1. We have been learning about tens and ones too. We played a game with ice block sticks and pipe cleaners. You have to roll the dice and the number on the dice is the number of ice block sticks you have to put in the ones column. You are only allowed 9 ice block sticks on the ones side. When you have ten you put a pipe cleaner around them to make a bundle of ten. Then you put your bundle of ten in the tens column. Do you know how to play that game? Or maybe we could teach you how to play it, if you don't know. We liked your game. We might have a go at playing that game in our class too.

  2. To Room 8,
We haven't played that game before but it sounds like a good one. Maybe you could teach us that one by taking a video of you playing it then we could watch your video and learn how to play it. It sounds like a fun game making groups of ten using pipe cleaners.
