Waitomo Caves

Yesterday Room 9 went to Waitomo Caves with the rest of the Middle Team we had lots of fun exploring the cave, going to the Discovery Centre and Musuem and then going on the Ruakuri Bushwalk where we went through broken down caves and even saw people Black Water Rafting.

Going to Waitomo Caves on PhotoPeach
We have learnt how to make a Photopeach to put some of our photos together in a slideshow. Check it out and leave us a comment or a question about what you would like to know about the caves and we will try to answer them for you. Sorry there are no photos of glow worms because we weren't allowed to take photos inside the cave.

  1. Room 16 has lots of questions about your cave trip. What were you crawling through in the photos? Why weren't you allowed to take photos of the glow worms? What was the statue the two girls were holding? How did you get to the caves and how long does it take? Were there any bats? How big are the caves - do you have to crawl or can you walk? Did you have fun? Did you have to have torches? What was the big statue with the concrete wall around it? Did you see any glow worms? If you did what did they look like? Did you go on a boat to see the glow worms? How did you see in the caves? What did you see in the caves.

  2. To Room 16,
We couldn't take photos of the glowworms because no one is allowed to take photos inside the cave to help save the limestone cave walls. Waitomo has heaps of visitors every day so if everyone took photos that would be a lot of flashes when the limestone cave is used to being in the dark and we probably wouldn't be able to see the glowworms glow that well.
We did have to ride in a boat at the end to get out of the cave and we saw heaps of glow worms on this boat ride.
We didn't see any bats while we were in there but we do know that there are bats that live inside Waitomo Caves.
We were guided through the cave with a tour guide. We didn't have torches but our tour guide did and at the start there were some lights but the rest of the time when it was pitch black we had the glowworms to make a little night light shine for us to see. The glowworms light was a blue/green colour.
We could walk through the cave easily but there are parts of the cave that you have to crawl through. The photos of us crawling through the cave were taken at the Discovery Centre at Waitomo this was just a pretend cave.
When we were inside the caves we saw glowworms and their sticky webs, limestone, stalagmites and stalactites, and stalagmites and stalactites that had made little statues, columns or pillars these are when the stalagmites and stalactites join together. When we went on our bush walk through a cave we even saw some adults doing black water rafting.
The girls were holding an example of a stalagmite (a piece of limestone that is growing from the bottom of the cave).
It took us over an hour to get there on a bus and over an hour to get home. We had to leave school at 8am and we didn't get back to school until just after 3:30pm some of us even fell asleep on the ride back.
