Mailbox Maths

We have a special maths mailbox in our class now. Twice a week a letter appears in our mailbox and it always seems to be from a character that we have got to know through our stories Mrs Head reads. The character writes us a letter with a maths question they are having trouble solving. We try our best to work it out and then we write a quick letter back to reply to the character. Sometimes we use our oral language time to talk about possible answers and the strategies we have used to get to these answers other times the letter is read out and stuck on the whiteboard for us to go up and show our working on before writing the letter.
This helps us with reading (reading the letter), maths working with word problems understanding if we have to use plus, take-away, times or divided by and explaining our strategy. It also helps with our writing when we have to follow the structure of a letter to write back to the character.
Take a look at some of the examples of our recent mailbox maths.

Dear Your Majesty The Queen,
We have worked out your problem that you were having trouble solving.
First we started with the two minutes and added that with the three minutes that equals five minutes.
Then five minutes plus five minutes equals 10 minutes.
Then 10 minutes plus 10 from the 12 gives us 20 minutes then we added on the two from the 12 to give us 22 minutes.
Next we added 22minutes plus 6 minutes equals 28 minutes.
Lastly we got the two lots of 30 seconds which added together makes 1 minutes. So 28 plus 1 equals 29 minutes.
This means you listened to speeches for 29 minutes.
Yours Sincerely
 Room 11 and Mrs Head.

Mrs Head found this new idea when she was looking on another teachers blog to find out more check out http://thefirstgradeparade.blogspot.co.nz/

Getting to know Room 7 at Frankton

This term we are very excited to be working with other Year 3 students from Frankton School. We are going to be researching in groups with some Frankton and some Vardon students our 'I wonder' questions about the Olympics. We will spend the term researching these and then presenting our findings in a collaborative way, hoping to meet up face to face at the end of the term to share our learning.

We sent Room 7 an email to let them know about Room 11 and Vardon School. This is what we sent;

Dear Room 7, Frankton School
We are Room 11 at Vardon School. We have 18 people in our class and we are a mix of Year 3 and 4 children, we have nine boys and nine girls in our class. We have people that are ICT leaders, Year 4 leaders and Enviro Agents in our class.
We have a Star of the Week each week. If you are the Star of the Week they get to do things for the teacher like getting the notices from the office and they get to sit on the couch. On Friday at the end of the day we write nice comments to the star of the week and we put them into an envelope for them to take home and read.
We have special netbooks in our class. We can go on our blogs on them. We are only allowed on the favourites bar for wet lunchtimes. We use our netbooks for maths, reading and writing. We like to go on games that help us remember and learn new maths.  In Room 11 we have a class blog. Everyone in Room 11 has their own blog as well and we have our class thinking blog ‘Oh the thinks you can think.’ We also have blogs for Techspertx (ICT experts that meet every Wednesday) and Enviro Agents (who meet every Tuesday who look after the school environment). We have blogs so that we can save our learning in there and other people (friends and family) can see our awesome work and leave a comment. We like having blogs because we can look back on our learning and reflect on how much we have learnt.
We have an ICT suite at school that we go to every week next to our library.
This term we have started a bookworm race. We are excited to read lots of books so that we can move spaces and see who the winner is. We have a notebook that we record the date and how many pages we read and a little bit about the story. This term we are looking forward to performing our big school production. We are also excited to do some learning with you about the Olympics.
Some highlights so far this year have been going to Waitomo Caves in Term 1 when we learnt about Change. Learning about Sound we enjoyed doing our performance to parents and the Middle Syndicate with our Sasa and making our own instruments to make a band.
Other cool things that we have at Vardon are a school Disco at the end of every term.  The Middle Syndicate go to Ngaruawahia at the end of the year to celebrate our hard work and it’s like getting a medal for all our hard work. Every second year the Middle Syndicate have a camp where we stay out on the field in tents.
From, Room 11 (at Vardon School)
We were super excited when we got our email reply from Frankton and found out more about them. Here's what they sent us back;

Dear Room 11, Vardon School

We are Room 7 at Frankton School. We are a Year 3 classroom. We have 24 children in our class. We have welcomed two new members to Room 7 just this week! We have 12 girls and 12 boys in our class. We also have two Enviro Agents, and we get to take turns as ICT leaders within the classroom.

We are a Virtues School which means that we learn about the different virtues that we can use to help us at school and at home. We also have a classroom metaphor that links in with our ‘food theme’ which is “the virtues are our ingredients for a successful year”. We then have a Super Baker of the Day who has shined their virtues the most for the day. They get a Virtues certificate, a trophy and medal for the day and they get to choose the sound of the day.

We have a classroom blog that we share as a class. We like to share with others what we are learning at school. We also love to watch educational videos and play learning games. We enjoy listening and reading stories on Tumblebooks. We also have an ICT Suite in our school that is just down the hall from us. There are also extra computers in the library.

This term we are focusing on how to be an information detective and what it means to be a researcher. We are looking at the investigation process and learning how we can follow this process to learn about the things that we wonder about. We are also interested in learning about different ways to present the information we have collected with others.

Our highlights this year have been our classroom assembly in Term 2. It was a Michael Jackson themed assembly. We love to listen to music and watch music videos. We also held a Year 3 Matariki Art Exhibition and each classroom got to go and walk around the different classrooms to view the artwork. We then raised money which will be spent on resources for the Middle Syndicate.

From Room 7 at Frankton School.

We read their reply and discovered that some things were the same, some were similar and somethings were completely different about our two schools and classes.
We found that they are a virtues school and they have 6 more people in their class then us. They only have Year 3's in their class but we have Year 3 and 4. Things that were simliar is that we both have Enviro Agents but they have 2 and we have 4. We both had ICT experts but their experts sounded like they were class experts but ours go to Techsperx meetings and share back to the class as well as being helpers in class. The things that were the same were we both have class blogs and go to the library and ICT each week.
We look forward to learning more about Frankton and working with Room 7 during the term.

R.I.P Margaret Mahy

Today when we got to school many of us had heard the news that Margaret Mahy had passed away. Margaret Mahy was one of New Zealand's most loved children's authors. She wrote over 200 books and poems and won lots of awards for her work. She was even made a member of the Order of New Zealand in 1993. Margaret Mahy was only 7-years-old (the same age as many of us) when she wrote her first story that got published. A Lion in the Meadow was her first published story in 1969. Today we remembered her by reading one of her well known books 'The Witch in the Cherry Tree' in the library.
She has said that her stories begin with real things that happen and she changes them by adding new adventures and ideas to what really happened. Being a writer she said she almost never got her stories right the first time unless they were very very short! So even Margaret Mahy had to go back and proof-read and edit her work making lots of changes from her first draft through to the final copy.

Here's a few comments about what we thought of Margaret Mahy;
Rhiannon said; "One of our reading groups is called Margaret Mahy. She is a really good book writer we love all of her books."
Samuel said; "We really love her stories especially 'The Witch in the Cherry Tree,' especially when she did the rain dance because David said she couldn't come  in and when David's cupcakes were burnt and the witch really liked them."
Oliver said; "Her books were cool. I have two or three of her books at home that I like to read."
Sofia said; "Margaret Mahy was a great writer of books and it is sad that she has passed away."
Tawhiao said; "Margaret Mahy had very nice kids books and she helped people learn to read."
Amelia said; "Margaret Mahy made really cool books for little kids to read."
Gina said; "She made really nice children's books that we could easily read as little children."
Faye said; "I liked her books a lot and I am really sorry about her passing away."
Saphyre said; "It's sad that Margaret Mahy died she was a very nice lady and she wrote heaps of cool books and we appreciate all the hard work she did."
Alex said; "You have been writing lots of books for people to read and we appreciate how you do all that hard work writing so many books."
Filipe said; "Thank you Margaret Mahy for giving us some special books to read. Oliver and Jacob are in your reading group."
Sarah said; "She was a great author and good at making interesting words up in her books."
Josh said; "It's sad that she died and now we can't read more of her books."
Shaynie-Lee said; "It was sad that she passed away because she write lot`s of books and they were all good book`s and I want her to write some more cool books."
Dayton said; "She was a good writer and her books weren't boring."
Maggie said; "She was a good author and the books that she made were cool and we have a group that are called Margaret Mahy."
Jacob said; "Margaret Mahy was a good storywriter and I liked her stories and it's bad that she has passed away because she was a good storywriter."
Paarth said; "Margaret Mahy has a lot of books and she must have been a great writer to remember her letters and fullstops and commas we can't remember that much."

Olympic Torch

We have been learning about the Olympic Torch. We found out that there is 8000 people carrying the 2012 London Olympics torch around the country. The oldest person carrying the torch is 84 and the youngest is only eight, that is the same age as some of us! The torch began its journey on 19 May and will end on 27 July.
The reason we have a torch that is lit is because in the Ancient Olympics in Greece a scared flame was lit from the sun's light and it stayed lit until the end of the games. Now the last runner of the torch runs it into the Olympic stadium during the opening ceremony and it still stays lit until the closing ceremony. The torch relay represents passing traditions down through each Olympic Games that is held.

Check out our individual blogs to see our own designs for a 2012 London Olympics torch.

Sound performance to parents

Well done Room 11 for all your hard work during the term. It was great to be able to share a little bit about what we have been learning with our families and the rest of the Middle Syndicate. Wasn't it great that although we were all learning about sound each class in the syndicate had a little something different to share. If you couldn't make the performance here is a little taste of what we performed. A special thanks to Gina as well who performed 'Twinkle, Twinkle little star,' on the Violin. It was great to hear plus we could see the strings vibrate to create sound when she slid her bow up and down the strings.

Explanation Writing using Etherpad

Check out our explanation writing that our group put together on a Etherpad. Each person got a different colour and could start typing at the same time which surprised a few of us!

Then this is us with our planning. We created a flowchart because it is an easy way to plan with explanation writing. We used this to then each pick a couple of the boxes of information to write about to create our group explanation on how milk is made.

Sound Poem

Thanks to Mr. R.'s World of Math and Science we have found a poem that talks about what we have been learning in class about sound. We know that sound creates vibrations and this is how we hear. We also know that the higher the sound the faster the vibration and the closer together the sound waves become. Also the further away we are from the sound the longer it takes to travel to our ears. Our brain will sometimes see sound before we hear it, for instance in a storm we see the lightening before the thunder, that's because light travels faster than sound.

Sound

Clang!
Bang!
Boom!
Pound!
drum kit
Things gotta' move,
To make a sound...
And that movement,
Makes vibration,
tuning forks vibrating
Makes a sound,
Celebration!
Vibrations come,
To our ear,
In a wave,
That we hear!
ear and sound wave
Vibrate fast,
Sound is high,
Vibrate slow,
Sound is low!

Clang,
Bang,
Boom,
Pound,
Things gotta' move,
To make a sound!

What is sound?
Sounds are made by vibrations that create waves (in air, water, etc.) When these waves are detected by our ears, we hear them as different sounds. When the vibrations are faster, the sounds have a higher pitch, and when they are slower, they have a lower pitch. When the vibrations are moving more (larger amplitude) the sound is louder, and when the vibrations are moving with a smaller amplitude, the sound is softer.

Sasa

In Room 11 we are learning about sound. Learning about beat and rhythm with music ties in with movement as well. So we are beginning our journey to learn a sasa as a class. I wonder how well we will all keep in time. Keep checking into our blog to see our progress.

Sound and Movement

While most of the class were at Kapa Haka the rest of us were experimenting with different types of sound. We ripped newspaper and shared our favourite sound. After that we showed sound and movement link by creating big, small, soft and loud movements.

Kapa Haka

Each Wednesday afternoon most of Room 11 choose to attend Kapa Haka learning lots of waiata. Today they came back and asked to show the rest of us what they had been learning.

Maori Phrase of the Week

Koi pai to mahi
this means,

Maori Phrase of the Week

Kohikohia nga rapihi
this means;

Hockey

Hockey

On Friday we had a go at playing hockey. None of us play hockey as a winter sport so it was great fun to get out and give it ago. We learnt how to hold the stick properly, and open and closed dribbling. Closed is like glue stuck to the ball and stick and open is when there is elastic between the ball and stick. Like all team games we need to learn to spread out so that when someone on our team gets the ball they can pass it to us and we can make a run for it.

Book Character Dress Up Day

On Friday we had a great day getting dressed up like a book character. We had some very creative costumes and a range of characters from Tinkerbell, to Where's Wally. Matilda, Cat in the Hat, Robin Hood and Superheroes. During the week we visited the book fair in the library and many of us were lucky enough to have some of our wishlist granted. We loved being read to by different teachers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Making Music

We are learning about 'Sound' in Room 11. Today was a rainy afternoon so after most of the class returned from Kapa Haka we decided to make our own mini orchastra's using our bodies to create the sound of rain falling. We quickly talked about the levels of sound and how we hear different parts to the rain, the wind gathering, rain falling and sometimes we hear thunder and lightning.
Have a listen to what we created with just five minutes in our groups.

Practicing our times tables

We are learning our times tables and division in maths. We are using these songs to help us learn them so that we can answer them straight away. We have learnt little tricks like using our doubles to answer our two times tables and skip counting in fives or tens. We can also use what we already know from our two times tables to help work out our threes.

Good Speeches

Then we watched these two examples of what a good speech looks and sounds like. The two girls sway a bit on their feet and we are going to work on not doing this too much because it can be distracting. They also have accents and the video quality isn't great which sometimes makes them hard to hear but the things we liked about their speeches were;

-Spoke loudly and clearly easy to understand- Josh
-She kept looking at the audience –Shaynie-Lee
-Everyone is hearing her speech – Tawhiao
-Started the speech in an interesting way – Rhiannon
-Acting at the start – Filipe
-Never used ums and ahs – Shaynie-Lee
-Added funny/humour- Gina

DOG SPEECH
-She used actions to help – Shaynie-Lee
-Spoke clearly and loudly- Sarah (A little bit hard to understand with accent)
-She had practiced her speech and knew it really well – Faye
-She didn’t use ums or ahs-Sarah
-Used humour- Sofia

Speeches- Tips on what not to do!

We have begun speeches time! We are all excited about having the chance to stand up in front of our class and practice writing and performing our speeches before our real one in a few weeks time. We hope to have a few from Room 11 go through to the Middle Syndicate finals and maybe even the school speech finals.
Today we watched this clip which showed us some tips on what not to do when performing our speech.

After watching it we realised that we need to;
Talk clearly and speak up (Alex)-Otherwise you don’t know what they are saying (Tawhiao)
Look at the audience, eye contact (Maggie)- Because if you don’t the audience won’t see your face you look silly and it is not very interesting for the audience to look at a piece of paper (Paarth)
Don’t use um’s and ah’s (Faye)-Makes your speech sound silly (Sarah) It doesn’t sound interesting (Gina)  The audience can’t concentrate or focus on your message (Alex)
Don’t talk too fast (Samuel) – They can’t hear you or your message (Tawhaio)

Room 11's Weta Experts put together this voicethread after independently researching their own facts about weta. Listen to what they discovered. The weta have ears in very strange places.

Term 1 Reflection

At the end of the term we created a class 'Wordle' we each got to name our top three favourite things about Term 1. The more popular something was the bigger the word got, so Mathletics and visiting Waitomo Caves were pretty popular.

Making groups of ten

At the moment the Hexagons are learning to make groups of tidy tens to help when adding lots of numbers together.
Here is a little video to remind yourself of how to group the numbers using tens frames, and of how to show your working. Use this video to help you when you get a little stuck. Remember being able to explain your strategy is just as important as being able to get the correct answer!

Class Award

On Friday we received the class award. Mrs Anderson had been very impressed with the way we are using our blog to share our learning particuarly with the Maori Phrase of the Week. Each week we come back to class, practice it together. Write the Te Reo Maori and English version of the phrase in our Te Reo books and then take turns at having buddies video it for our blog. We have had lots of people view our videos and it is great to have an audience to practice this second language with.

Waitomo Caves

Room 11 and the Middle Syndicate visited the Glow-worm Cave in Waitomo on Tuesday we then headed to the discovery centre and onto the Ruakaui bush walk. We had a great day seeing all of these amazing parts of New Zealand with our own eyes. Coming out of the Glow-worm Cave we took a boat trip seeing loads of glow-worms. Did you know that glow-worms can only be found in New Zealand and four states in Australia?

Waitomo tour

On Tuesday we were lucky enough to tour through the ancient Waitomo Caves. Check out this video to remind yourself of what you saw and then have a go at answering these questions.
1) When were the caves discovered (found)?
2) Where can you find stalagmites and stalactites?
3) The man in the video's highlight (favourite part) was the boat trip. What was yours and why?
4) Tell me one thing you learnt from our trip.

Pre ideas about caves-our questions before the trip

Doubles Song

We have also been learning our doubles so that we can quickly give the answer. This song will help us remember our tricky doubles so that we can add other numbers like 8+9 using our doubles; eg: 8+8=16 plus one more because it asked for 9=17.

Language Experience-notetaking

Today was the first day we have used our note taking notebooks. In Room 11 we use our notebooks to quickly write our amazing words down, especially when we have a language experience. Hopefully we use these words in our writing to make it really interesting with our descriptive vocabulary. Mrs Head modelled to us first how we take notes using key words and not being worried about our spelling, so long as we can read it back. The idea of the notebook is to get all of our ideas down. This afternoon we had five different plates of food including; dried cranberries, salt and vinegar chips, smarties, honey and citric acid. Mrs Head warned us to only take a tiny bit of citric acid because it makes your eyes water but lots of us went back for a little bit more! We had to make sure that we wrote down at least five descriptive words for each one. We came up with words like slimy, sticky, crunchy, gooey, sour, smooth, chewy, bitter.

Tabloid Sports

What a great day was had by all and we were lucky enough that the weather held off for us, in fact it almost got a little too hot! This year we had a range of fun new games from the classic egg and spoon race to polka dot goals and games with wet sponges. We worked together as a team to get points and helped the juniors. But the highlight was at the end of the day when each of the middle and senior classes went head to head in a tug of war competition. We had practised some techniques of counting one, two, three pull and standing on alternate sides of the rope but Room 10 were just too strong for us!

Welcome Back to 2012

Welcome back to 2012!
Well what a busy couple of weeks we have had to kick start our year with. We have been learning about statistics and have created our own investigations completing the process of gathering data through a tally chart and then graphing our results. We have been looking at our classroom rules and what it means to be a powerful learner. We have written about one event from our holiday's and then set our writing goals from these stories. We have also been perfecting the art of sketching, having sketched half of our face. Room 11 is learning to work together as a team through our Survivor Challenge that we complete every Friday and this has already been a huge hit!
It is great to see the familiar faces of Room 11 being great role models to our new Year 3 students and taking on leadership roles. Well done to our new Year 4's who are settling into the Middle Syndicate well and into Room 11.
Check back in on our blog throughout the year to see what exciting things we are up to and don't forget to check out our individual blogs as well.

Healthy Breakfast

I learnt that toast, weetbix, yoghurt are healthy for breakfast and if you don't eat any breakfast you can't learn anything. I enjoyed learning about drinks and foods because Milly told us that some foods help you grow but they don't and they just want you to buy it.

My weekend

My weekend was awesome because I went to Rainbows End and I went on the roller coster and the goldrush. The goldrush was scary because on the way we went into a tunnel and there was skeltons on the wall. On the log flume there were frogs jumping over us and bats and little men. It was my first time at Rainbows End and I want to go back when I am 10 because then I am older and can go on the roller coaster and won't cry at the end.

Teaching the class Te Reo

I enjoyed teaching the class kapa haka because I really like teaching people Maori language. So that when they meet a Maori person and go to a Marae you can tell them that you have learnt some Maori because you have learnt kapa haka from the people in your classroom.
